Edelen is currently Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy at the Center for the Application of Mathematics at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Chairman of the Undergraduate Applied Mathematics Group. Prior to this position, he taught at Purdue University, was a staff mathematician at the RAND Corporation, and held the positions of staff engineer and research and development scientist in industry. Dr. Edelen has also authored three books on mathematical physics. He is a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and a member of the Tensor Society of Japan and the Board of Editors of the International Journal of Engineering Science. He holds B.E.S., M.S.E. and Ph.D. degrees from Johns Hopkins University. Presently, Anastasios D. Kydoniefs is associate professor at the Center for the Application of Mathematics, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In addition to his teaching experience, he has been a senior research assistant and a university research fellow at the University of Nottingham, England. Born in Greece, Dr. Kydoniefs received his B.Sc. degree from the University of Athens, Greece and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Nottingham, England. EXCERPT: Preface to the Second Edition - This edition differs from the first in several respects. First, we have corrected the errors and misprints that occur in the first edition and have simplified the proofs at a number of points. We have added a number of worked numerical examples in those places where the students appear to need further clarification by way of explicit calculation. The last lecture of the first edition has been replaced by a new lecture on least squares and weighted least squares solutions of inhomogeneous linear systems. Classroom experience over the past few years has shown that this material is more useful to students in science and engineering than the short introduction to control theory given in the last lecture of the first edition. Finally, we have added a significant number of additional numerical problems at the end of the book. We deem that sufficient problems are now included to cover, without repetition, the assignments for two consecutive years of two semesters each . . . Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
