Inhaltsangabe

Many people view the God of the end times as a vengeful, wrathful, and judgmental one. Conversely, Tim LaHaye, the preeminent scholar on prophecy, believes that the God of creation is a loving, merciful, and gracious God. Through Scripture he reveals that God has a wonderful plan for a new heaven and a new earth-as well as a plan for each individual in the new millennium. In THE MERCIFUL GOD OF PROPHECY, LaHaye explores prophecy from biblical times to our future. Through perceptive study of Scripture and the attentive use of examples from The Book of Daniel to Revelations, the author reveals God's great plan for our eternity.

Avid fans of the Left Behind fictional series who expect the same action-packed prophetic scenarios to animate LaHaye's nonfiction work on biblical prophecy may come away disappointed. This presentation of future events as prophesied in the Bible is more akin to a Sunday afternoon drive through the country: the pace is slow, ploddingly so. The first two-thirds of the book deals, almost painstakingly, with setting the foundation for who God is and why prophecy is vital for today's Christian. Extra attention is given to Jesus and his role as the greatest prophet ever. LaHaye also builds a case for studying prophecy by detailing seven attributes of God's character: God is loving, faithful, patient, merciful, just, secure and the source of hope. LaHaye offers a few heartfelt personal comments for his readers, and the book improves somewhat as it goes along. In the last pages, LaHaye attempts to tie together a myriad of Scripture verses by way of a neat, concise question-and-answer section but, because it occurs in an appendix, many readers might consider this victory to be too little and too late. Overall, LaHaye succeeds in what he does best: sharing biblical prophecy. However, the droning and information-laden tone makes for dreary reading indeed.

LaHaye was already one of the most successful media evangelists when he found Jerry Jenkins to help him whip together the megaselling Left Behind novels. Probably figuring that those yarns have softened up a new audience for his preaching, he has employed another not-so-ghostly writer to gussy up what is just his brand of the kind of Christian prophetic spieling that has made many a reverend's fortune and is the basis of Left Behind. All the usual suspect texts are cited--all of Revelation, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 (the rapture business), and a passel of OT and NT pull-quotes--with the spin this time emphasizing that God doesn't enjoy punishing sinners, that His mercy is more awesome than his wrath, and that all you gotta do is love Him. No Christian would deny those three points, but many would and do dispute the detailed extrapolation of prophecy that LaHaye indulges. Finesse it however they may (by simultaneously flaunting God's mercy, for instance), prophecy-mongers always seem bent on frightening people to the church, and that tactic, most Christian thinkers have maintained, is illegitimate. It sells books, though, fictional or merely speculative. Ray Olson
