MILTON HELPERN IN THE WITNESS BOX The Carl Coppolino Case, in which a doctor defended by F. Lee Bailey almost got away with twin murders. The Wylie-Hoffert Case, the career girl rape-murders that panicked a whole generation of young women. The Peter Reilly Case, in which a gruesome crime in Connecticut nearly led to a hideous miscarriage of justice. The Joan Robinson Hill Case, the bizarre Texas death that gave birth to two best-selling books, Blood and Money and Prescription Murder. The Alice Crimmins Case, in which lurid sex details shared headlines with horrifying murder revelations. Dr. Milton Helpern, the world's greatest medical detective, reveals how he helped solve these and other famous mysteries, as he describes the many clues a medical examiner looks for to determine the cause of death--the presence of a tine scar, the content of the victim's last meal, poisons that leave no trace, and drugs that camouflage. Milton Helpern, M.D. was called "the most celebrated coroner since the art was initiated in the twelfth century." He participated in many of the most celebrated criminal cases of the twentieth century, while contributing to the establishment of forensic pathology as a fully recognized medical specialty. Dr. Helpern was the author of hundreds of professional papers as well as the classic textbook on forensic pathology, and was active as a consultant in cases around the country and throughout the world. He died in April 1977. Bernard Knight, M.D. is a respected pathologist in his own right, as well as the author of many works of fiction and nonfiction.
