Emphasizing polymer based fiber-reinforced composites, this book is designed to provide readers with a significant understanding of the complexities involved in characterizing dynamic events and the corresponding response of advanced fiber composite materials and structures. These elements include dynamic loading devices, material properties characterization, analytical and experimental techniques to assess the damage and failure modes associated with various dynamic loading events. Concluding remarks are presented throughout the text which summarize key points and raise issues related to important research needed.

About the authors ROBERT L. SIERAKOWSKI, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science at Ohio State University in Columbus. His previous books include Damage Tolerance of Composites and The Behavior of Structures Composed of Composite Materials. SHIVE K. CHATURVEDI, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science at Ohio State University in Columbus. A former member of the editorial board of the international journal Composites Engineering, he authored an entry in the multivolume Encyclopedia of Composites.
The first book to address this pivotal topic in engineering-with essential information for practical applications involving composite materials In Dynamic Loading and Characterization of Fiber-Reinforced Composites, engineers finally have a single-source reference for their work with fiber-reinforced composite materials. Two recognized researchers in the field provide accessible coverage of dynamic loading devices, material properties characterization, assessment and evaluation of damage and failure associated with various dynamic loading events, and more-equipping engineers and students with the information they need in order to carry out their own projects effectively. The book includes:
* Concepts and classification of dynamic events, plus an in-depth look at dynamic properties of composites, test procedures, and test data
* An examination of wave motion in fiber-reinforced composites-with coverage of effective modulus and other theories, wave motions in composite plates under impact loadings, and experimental wave propagation studies
* An expanded discussion of damage detection and characterization methods, damage tolerance assessment and design
* Detailed treatment of impact damage classification and modeling-including energy balance, spring-mass, and other models
* Clear summaries of major research findings on the subject-in easy-to-grasp tabular form
* More than 100 illustrations and a full complement of references on each topic discussed
The behavior of composite materials under dynamic loads is an important issue in practical engineering, essential for any work involving fiber-composite materials and structures. But to date, no book has focused solely on this complex topic. Now seasoned engineering professionals Robert L. Sierakowski and Shive K. Chaturvedi fill this serious gap in the engineering literature with a comprehensive and systematic treatment of the properties and dynamic loadings of fiber-reinforced composites. This well-organized volume begins with a breakdown of the dynamic properties of composites and a complete look at various testing methods and data derived from each technique. Next is a discussion of wave motion in fiber-reinforced composites, including an investigation of effective modulus theory, an examination of wave motions in composite plates under impact loading, and a series of experimental studies conducted on inspected composite plates. The book then discusses non-destructive testing, including the applications and limitations of currently available non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, and covers a variety of factors that affect the damage tolerance of composites. Important information on impact damage modeling, along with a classification of model types, is also presented. This unique resource makes available for the first time a broad knowledge base in current design, characterization, and testing practice, and provides a solid foundation for future research. It will be welcomed by aspiring and practicing materials scientists and aerospace, automotive, and structural engineers.
