Trading systems are the strategies all technical traders use to place their trades. However, any given system is only effective for a certain amount of time, under a specific set of circumstances. Therefore, to be truly successful, traders must change their systems on a regular basis. This text discusses the impermanence and built-in obsolescence of trading systems. About the author JOHN SWEENEY is former Vice President, Diversification, Seafirst Banking Corporation, a Northwest bank holding company. A trader him-self, he was the editor of Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities magazine from 1982-1990 and is now the technical editor.
