This study describes all aspects of architectural lighting design practice and techniques. The authors explain how to provide light for architecture by describing in clear and simple terms the process of lighting design, which can be applied to any space with lighting needs. All elements of lighting are described, including perception, brightness and use of daylight, with definitions of terminology used. Numerous illustrations are included to highlight the text.

GARY GORDON, IALD, IES, is founder and head of Gary Gordon Architectural Lighting, and is currently working for Flack + Kurtz, the engineering consulting firm. He is a member of the International Association of Lighting Designers and the Illuminating Engineering Society. He recently received the distinguished IALD Citation for Excellence in Lighting Design by displaying high aesthetic achievement backed by technical expertise. Mr. Gordon's articles have appeared in the Encyclopedia of Architecture and Architectural Lighting magazine, for which he wrote a monthly column entitled The Design Department. A frequent speaker on the subject of lighting throughout the United States, Mr. Gordon has also taught graduate and undergraduate courses at the Lighting Institute at the Parsons School of Design in New York. The late JAMES L. NUCKOLLS, IALD, worked as senior consultant and project director for Luxco, his lighting design firm. He also taught for fifteen years at the Parsons School of Design, where he instituted the Master of Fine Arts in Lighting Design program and coordinated the Parsons Lighting Institute for Continuing Education. Nuckolls was a founding member and past president of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) and a sustaining member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES). In addition to authoring the two prior editions of Interior Lighting for Environmental Designers, Nuckolls also acted as contributing editor to Interiors magazine. The James L. Nuckolls Fund for the Education of the Lighting Professional was established in 1988 in recognition of his service to the lighting industry.
