The author addresses the nuts and bolts issues involved in custom software tooling and covers building a versatile library of common functions to show how to make the concept of software usability achievable. Example source code is presented as pseudocode in an action chart format, in C, and in some cases assembler language. Case studies include three complete tools of immediate use to programmers--a print processor, a text filter and a documentation builder. Since the text is not linked to any specific language or compiler, it will be useful for years to come. A separate disk is available that includes all sample programs.
