Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

SHIRLEY DOWDY is Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Associate Professor of Statistics at West Virginia University, where she has been since 1971. She is the author of Statistical Experiments Using BASIC, Mathematics: Art and Science (Wiley), and Geometry for Teachers with G. Y. Rainich (Wiley). Dr. Dowdy received her PhD in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame in 1964. STANLEY WEARDEN is Professor of Statistics at West Virginia University, where he has been since 1969. He was Fulbright Professor of Statistics at the University of the West Indies and previously served for four years as Chairman of the Department of Statistics and Computer Science at W.V.U. Among his many honors and offices are the Biometric Society, American Statistical Association, Phi Mu Epsilon and Gamma Sigma Delta. Dr. Wearden earned his PhD in population genetics from Cornell University in 1957.

This survey is written from the viewpoint of the researcher who wants to know how to carry out a procedure, how to interpret the results (whether the analysis is performed by hand or a statistical computer package), and who wants some intuitive understanding of why the procedure works. All procedures are explained in the context of realistic research situations and then summarized in general terms. The usefulness of statistics is illustrated throughout, beginning in the first chapter with inference. Probability and descriptive statistics are developed in the book as needed and do not appear as separate chapters as in most books. Interpretation of the computer output of statistical analyses and nonparametric procedures are integrated with the discussion of each statistical procedure.
