Will Europe have favoured status or be a rank outsider? Has Europe prepared for the challenge of New Asia? Change causes discomfort ? especially for long-established economies threatened with a loss of dominance. Adjusting to inevitable change quickly and with a sense of optimism is the only practical strategy for economic survival. Today an urgent repositioning of attitude is needed by business leaders. In this eminent study, Corrado G. M. Letta examines the problems facing Europe. He confronts the reasons why European companies are weak in Southeast Asia and peels back the layers of misunderstanding. He reveals the expectations and fears of both Europeans and Asians and suggests long-term strategies for formulating successful cultures of partnership between diverse cultural trading groups. In particular, he highlights the need for a single, collective ?European Culture? to relate to the hundreds of cultures in Asia, and to compete with USA Inc and Japan Inc. Current exports from Europe to ?emerging? Southeast Asian markets already run at over US$99 billion. The prize is a market estimated at 3 trillion dollars in the year 2004, and rivalry for market share is already fierce. As the gigantic emerging markets of Southeast Asia line up with their future ?partners in trade?, the question ceases to be whether Europe needs Asia. The reality is whether Asia will continue to need Europe. This timely study is for everyone concerned with strategic relationships, for chief executives, senior consultants and advisors, leaders of trade missions, policy-makers and parliamentarians. It illuminates the road to Asia for all in the enterprise sector. Reliable corporate reference becomes increasingly important as organizations confront the burgeoning complexity and the potential of international markets. This book deserves pride of place in the boardrooms of all exporting organizations. "? I am certain that the present work will prove a valuable adviser for all those who wish to exploit their opportunities on the markets of Southeast Asia." ?Dr Rainer Gepperth, Director Hanns Seidel Foundation, Munich, Germany "The big challenge of Asian markets is one of the most difficult problems many European companies are trying to solve. This is particularly true for a number of Italian small and medium-size enterprises which are dedicating a special effort to succeed in the area. This book can be a precious tool to design the winning strategy for those companies, helping them to improve their competitive choices and to bridge the cultural and communication differences." ?Federico Galdi, Director, International Affairs, Confindustria, Rome, Italy "? an invaluable asset to companies, corporations and businesses seriously investing/co-operating with Southeast Asian counterparts." ?M. Stagno d?Alcontres, CEO, Bds Bank, London "? about 45% of worldwide market growth is expected to be generated in developing Asia. ? exports and investment in this growth matters ? ultimately for wealth and jobs in Europe. ? Switzerland "? constitutes a substantial contribution to deepening the knowledge and understanding of ? Southeast Asia." ?Luigi Marini, UK Representative, Bank of Italy "The work by Dr Letta on the business relations between Southeast-Asia and Europe is indeed interesting and inspiring.
