Since its invention, there have been many advances in skyscraper design, enabling construction to reach greater heights through high strength concrete, or in creating more electronically responsive systems. Malaysian architect Ken Yeang, provides an informative study of this building type, discussing environmental systems, the superstructure and foundations, the changing nature of work and the workplace and many more topics. 22 projects are examined in detail with secondary texts and diagrams providing supplementary information relating to the main text.

'As old technology reaches its limits, the age of the super-skyscraper dawns, driven by emergent new forms and new technologies - the ultimate building becomes a city in itself.' - Professor Ivor Richards.
From its origins in the nineteenth-century American high-rise office block, the skyscraper has become the dominant building type of the twentieth-century. Developers have been quick to seize upon its potential to maximise land use, and rapid advances in technology and construction techniques have led to a proliferation of ever taller buildings.
In this timely reconsideration of skyscraper design, Kenneth Yeang proposes an important new methodology. This is the bioclimatic approach: one which uses passive, low-energy techniques to produce buildings which are environmentally interactive, efficient and increase occupant comfort.
To guide the reader through this complex subject, the book is divided into ten easily accessible chapters which covers topics including vertical circulation, wind and ventilation, external walls and cladding, sub- and super-structures, and internal environmental services, as well as the changing nature of work and the workplace.
Based on the research, design and development of the author's own architectural practice in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the text is illustrated with many examples from his own work, and interspersed with comments from leading authorities.
