" Analogical Thinking provides a clear discussion of poststructuralism, its value in interpretation, and its power to combat the individualistic modes of representation that emerged from the Enlightenment." --W.F. Williams, CHOICE, September 2001 -- (09/24/2001)

Reseña del editor

Analogical Thinking argues that sometime around the turn of the twentieth century, a new mode of comprehension arose, supplementing received Enlightenment ideas concerning the nature of understanding and explanation. Focusing on the innovations of structural linguistics and its poststructural legacy, the individualism of Enlightenment knowledge and the collaborations of post-Enlightenment information, and practices of reading and interpretation across the arts and sciences, Analogical Thinking examines the ways in which analogical presentations of similarities respond to the experiences of twentieth-century culture. The book traces this mode of thinking in linguistics, collaborative intellectual work in the arts and sciences, and interpretations of literary and sacred texts, concluding with a reading of the concept of Enlightenment in a comparison of Descartes and Foucault. The book examines the poststructuralism of Derrida; the collaborations of information theory and modern science as opposed to the individualism of Adam Smith and others, and analogical interpretations of Yeats, Dinesen, the Bible, Dreiser, and Mailer. Its overall aim is to present an interdisciplinary examination of a particular kind of understanding that responds to the experiences of our time. Ronald Schleifer is Professor of English, University of Oklahoma. His books include Rhetoric and Death: The Language of Modernism and Postmodern Discourse Theory, Criticism and Culture; and Culture and Cognition: The Boundaries of Literary and Scientific Inquiry.

Book is clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Dust jacket shows minor handling wear. -- The book explores the intricate connections between language, thought, and understanding through the lens of analogy and collaborative interpretation. Schleifer delves into the philosophical and cognitive foundations of analogical reasoning, examining its pivotal role in the evolution of post-Enlightenment thought and its implications for language theory, literary interpretation, and collaborative communication. At the heart of this work is the concept of analogical thinking - how we use analogy as a cognitive tool to draw connections between seemingly disparate ideas, bridging the gap between known and unknown concepts. Schleifer argues that analogical thinking is not just a linguistic or rhetorical device but a fundamental process of human cognition that has shaped the development of modern philosophy, linguistics, and literary theory. Schleifer begins by situating his discussion within the broader context of post-Enlightenment philosophy. He traces the intellectual history of analogical reasoning from the Enlightenment to the present day, highlighting how shifts in philosophical thought have influenced our understanding of language and interpretation. He draws on the works of key thinkers in the history of philosophy, including Kant, Hegel, and Nietzsche, to demonstrate how analogical thinking has been central to the development of modern epistemology and hermeneutics. In the realm of language theory, Schleifer explores how analogical thinking underpins the structure of language itself. Through detailed analysis, he shows how analogies create networks of meaning that allow for complex communication and understanding, enabling language to function as a tool for collaborative thought. The book also delves into the implications of analogical thinking for literary interpretation. The Author explores how readers use analogies to make sense of literary narratives, drawing connections between the text and their own experiences, cultural context, and knowledge. This collaborative process, he suggests, is central to the act of reading and interpreting literature. Schleifer's analysis extends beyond language and literature to consider the broader implications of analogical thinking for cultural theory and cognitive science. He explores how analogical reasoning shapes our understanding of the world, influencing everything from scientific theories to social interactions. By examining the cognitive and cultural dimensions of analogy, Schleifer provides a comprehensive account of how this fundamental cognitive process underpins our ability to think, communicate, and collaborate. "Analogical Thinking: Post-Enlightenment Understanding in Language, Collaboration, and Interpretation" is a significant contribution to the fields of philosophy, language studies, and literary theory. It offers a deep and nuanced exploration of how analogical reasoning shapes our understanding of language and the world, providing valuable insights for scholars, students, and anyone interested in the intersections of language, thought, and culture. -- Contents: Introduction: Analogical Thinking; Part I Language -- 1. Scientific Semiotics and Interpretation 2. Deconstruction and Linguistic Analysis; Part II Collaborations -- 3.
