De telles recherches ne sont pas oiseuses. Il importe au pro grès de chaque science que ses méthodes soient bien définies, ses problèmes nettement posés, et pour cela il faut se rendre compte de ses relations avec toutes les autres, et de ce qu'on peut appeler, par analogie, sa position systématique. Pour le montrer, je me bornerai à dire comment j'ai été amené moi même à entreprendre ce travail. Je suis parti de l'économie politique, et en particulier du problème dit des richesses im matérielles. Je me suis convaincu que, si la science écono mique, fondéc au siècle dernier, semble frappée d'immobilité, et n'a fait, depuis Ad. Smith et J. - B. Say, presque aucune acqui sition vraiment importante, c'est qu'elle a fermé elle-mème toutes les voies par où elle pouvait progresser, en se confluent dans l'étude des richesses matérielles. J'étais done conduit à déterminer l'objet de la science économique, à la distinguer des autres branches de la sociologie; j'arrivai ainsi à recon naître une analogie frappante et nullement artificielle entre certaines lois économiques et certaines lois du langage. Bien plus, la logique elle-méme m'apparut comme une branche de la sociologie. Il me fallait donc définir la sociologie, et je ne pouvais y réussir, cette science étant à peine née, qu'en tà chant de m'élever à une conception de l'ensemble de la science, et de fixer la nature, la signification et les limites de chacun des systèmes partiels dont se compose le système total.
