Excerpt from An Interpolation Procedure for Calculating Atmospheric Band Absorptions From Laboratory Data
This equation states that for radiation at any wave number v, the flux per unit area of radiation I, which has passed through a mass of material m is given as the product of the incident energy flux (iq) and the exponential of the negative product of the mass m and an absorption coefficient k(u) characteristic of that material. The application of this simple relationship can result in a very complex problem when one attempts to calculate k(v) for a given material.
This is especially true for an infrared band of a complex molecule.
