Como hacia 1604, un retrato de nuestro autor, que es el mismo que hoy reproducimos, fué dibuja do por Alonso Franco y grabado por Samuel Estra dano, presumimos que para entonces gozaba ya de prestigio y celebridad el insigne poeta, quien su po conservarlos y aumentarlos considerablemente, pues en 1621, no sólo el Virrey, la Real Audiencia y el Cabildo Eclesiástico, sino también la Nobilísi ma Ciudad, que antes le había desairado y pospuesto á un hombre obscuro, le encomendaban de consu no exquisitos trabajos literarios, destinados a per petuar los acontecimientos más memorables de la colonia.
