Want of hearing from birth, or from an early age, is followed by dumbnefs, (if the intellects are perfect,) merely becaufe it precludes the opportunity of learning, or being confirmed in the ufe of, fpeech, ln the ordinary way. Dumbnefs, where the hearing is perfeéh and the intellect defective, (no uncommon cafe,) proceeds from want of ideas, and of judgment to direct the organs of fpeech in the forma.
