Hartley was forty years of age, and wise in his generation. In other words he was perfectly aware of the futility of dissuading a dramatic aspirant from wooing fame and fortune on the stage, and of at tempting to convince a lover that he had better not propose. For these two purposes breath is wasted. But he had a sincere affection for Collier, and, though he knew he was making a fool of himself, he still remonstrated.
