Excerpt from The Work of Michelangelo: Reproduced in One Hundred and Sixty-Nine Illustrations
The birth of Michelangelo took place at the time of the passing of the storm of the Renaissance. That storm was followed by the crystallization of the art-spirit of Tuscany in the person of this supremely gifted creative artist who was destined to embody the deepest feelings in the soul of the people of Italy. In the work of Michelangelo the wild passions of the race to which he belonged found wonderful expression, an expression of the South comparable to that which Rembrandt accomplished of the N orth. What Rem brandt did for the Teutonic spirit, Michelangelo did for the Latin. To both these masters art was the articles of their living faith, a faith to which they devoted their lives with almost impassioned self sacrifice.
