The main object of this treatise is to give in the form of definitions with illustrative examples, a survey of'the different meanings which, in the course of the centuries, have been attributed to the English relationship names. The work has been based mainly on the Old English Dictionaries of Bosworth Toller and of Sweet, the Middle English Dictionaries of Strat mann-bradley and Matzners and especially on the New English Dictionary. The material is grouped according to the native or foreign origin of the words, and the different words] are ar ranged for the most part in alphabetical order. Numerous cross references are added to enable the reader to establishireadily the various meanings of each word.
