Excerpt from An Unvested Sister: Recollections of Mary Wiltse
Ary wiltse, the third daughter of Robert Wiltse and his wife, Mary Romeyn Bard, was born at Sing Sing, on the Hudson, on Easter Sunday, 1843; and her life, until, in 1879, she came to New York, was passed almost wholly in the town of her birth. She was native to that region which the pen of Irving has immortalized, and the natural magic cling ing to its surroundings never ceased to have fascination for her. It was doubtless the infinite variety of the associations ofthese early years that gave rise to the wish long after, when Grace house-by-the-sea became overcrowded, that a real country home could be found for her children.
Her mother tells a story of her very young childhood which those who knew her in her later life will find characteristic. It happened when she was only seven years old that she made her first visit away from Sing Sing. She had been taken to spend a few days with the family of Dr. Berrian, then Rector of Trinity Church, new-york, with whom she was a great pet. At the end of two days she grew sick with longing for her country home, and, without saying a word to any one, man aged in some mysterious way to get to the station, and on the train. The train had hardly started when she found she had lost her purse; but, when the conductor came to collect her fare.
