Excerpt from Exercise and Food for Pulmonary Invalids

I believe it was Artemus Ward who proposed to get up a new life insurance company to insure peo ple only while they were in bed. He had looked into the matter extensively, and found that almost everybody died in bed, so he concluded that was a dangerous place.

As usual with this genius, there was some wisdom in his wit, for sedentary life and respiratory inactivity are undoubtedly largely explanatory of the prefer ence tuberculosis shows for the pulmonary organs. Why is it that consumption is so often of the lungs, and not at first, at least - of the rest of the body?
