Rontgenstrahlen entstehen bekanntlich beim Auftreffen von Kathodenstrahlen auf ein ihre Bewegung hemmendes Hindernis. Die den Röntgenstrahlen verwandten y Strahlen werden beim radioaktiven Zerfall vermutlich durch den Akt der Emission von ß-strahlen erzeugt. Die Kathodenstrahlen und die -strahlen sind nichts weiter als Schwärme von Elektronen, die sich beim Fehlen äußerer Krafte mit konstanter Geschwindigkeit geradlinig durch den Raum bewegen. Das einzelne Elektron führt dabei ein mit ihm scheinbar starr verbundenes elektromagnetisches Feld mit sich fort. Der elektrische Teil dieses Feldes ist, mäßige, d. H. Der Lichtgeschwindigkeit nicht zu nahe kommende Trans lationen vorausgesetzt, vom Elektron aus betrachtet isotrop: die Kraftlinien verlaufen von der kugelformig gedachten Oberflache der Korpuskel in radialer Richtung nach allen Seiten gleichmäßig ins Unendliche; die Feldstärke ist umgekehrt proportional dem Quadrat der Entfernung. Der magnetische Teil des Feldes ist polar in bezug auf eine im Mittelpunkt des Elektrons auf seiner Bewegungsrichtung senkrecht stehende Ebene. Die magnetischen Kraftünien werden durch Kreise dargestellt, welche die Bahn als Achse umschlingen; die F eldstärke an einem Punkt im Abstand r vom Mittelpunkt des mit der Geschwindigkeit q fortschreitenden Elektrons ist 8° qs;r; wenn 5 die elektrische Ladung der Korpuskel bedeutet. Das magnetische Feld besitzt also in Rich tung der Bahn [sin (q, r) 0] den Wert Null.
