Author Todd Rainsberger traces the evolution of Howe's photographic style through more than 50 years of the American cinema. From 1922 until 1974, Howe photographed 125 films. Howe's career parallels the pictorial history of film: from the hand-cranked cameras of the twenties, through the studio years of the thirties and forties, to the turmoil of television and wide screen in the fifties, and the dominance of color in the sixties. In studying Howe's work, the book relates the technical and creative history of American cinematography. And it does so in an authoritative yet readable narrative illustrated with more than one hundred high-impact photos of Howe at work and stills from his films. The book thoroughly explores the real process of making movies, not the glamour side. James Wong Howe was a master at creating powerful, emotional images. To discover Howe the artist, Dr. Rainsberger researched Howe's life and work for two years.
