Revival Type is a collection of contemporary digital fonts with origins in the past. Examples include direct revivals of metal and wood typefaces, while others are looser interpretations of older typefaces. Among the fonts are interpretations of classic designs by Nicolas Jenson, Claude Garamont, Robert Granjon, William Caslon, John Baskerville, Giambattista Bodoni, Firmin Didot and other iconic names. Alongside them are typefaces rooted in the work of important, though lesser known, names such as Eudald Pradell, Philippe Grandjean and Richard Austin. Finally, there are updates and revisions of 20th-century classics like Palatino, Meridien, DIN, Metro and Neue Haas Grotesk (the original name of Helvetica). Some designs are not revivals of typefaces but of letterforms, from inscriptions to calligraphic manuals to letters in posters and bookjackets. Some revivals are aesthetic extensions of 20th-century typefaces that have been updated technologically. Others are actually reinterpretations or variations on typefaces from the past necessitated by having to make types that function in the 21st century and not in the distant past. Written by noted typographic historian Paul Shaw, the book explores the revival and adaptation of classic letterforms inspired by Renaissance printing, Victorian display typography, Art Deco design, modernism, and twentieth-century graphic traditions. Richly illustrated throughout, the volume highlights the relationship between typography, technology, design history, and visual communication. An essential reference for graphic designers, typographers, design historians, branding specialists, and readers interested in the preservation and reinvention of historic type design. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Shaw, Paul. Revival type : digital typefaces inspired by the past / foreword by Jonathan Hoefler. London: Thames & Hudson, 2017. Hardback, VG+. Illustrated boards. Blue cloth spine, slightly scuffed to top and base, with gilt lettering. Binding strong and tight. 248pp., colour and b/w illustrations and typefaces. An illuminating account of the design inspirations and technical transformations that have shaped the digital typefaces of the 21st century. In this fascinating tour through typographic history, Paul Shaw provides a visually rich exploration of digital type revival. Many typefaces from the pre-digital past have been reinvented for use on computers and mobile devices, while other new font designs are revivals of letterforms, drawn from inscriptions, calligraphic manuals, posters, and book jackets. Revival Type deftly introduces these fonts, many of which are widely used, and engagingly tells their stories. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions.
