Perfected science, according to Nicholas Rescher, is "not a realizable condition of things but an idealization that provides a useful contrast conception to highlight the limited character of what we do and can attain." Rescher's discussion focuses on the theoretical limits of science - concentrating on what science can discover, not what it should discover. He explores in detail the existence of limits or limitations on scientific inquiry, especially those that, in principle, preclude the full realization of the aims of science, as opposed to those that relate economic obstacles to scientific progress.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing of Nicholas Rescher's philosophical examination of the theoretical limits of scientific inquiry. Rather than asking what science ought to investigate, Rescher considers what science can ultimately discover and whether there are inherent boundaries to scientific knowledge. The work addresses the limitations imposed by human cognition, conceptual frameworks, complexity, prediction, scientific explanation, and the possibility that even an ideally developed science would remain incomplete. Published as Volume 10 in the Pittsburgh Series in Philosophy and History of Science. Edition Note: Copyright 1984 by The Regents of the University of California. Complete number line "1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9" confirms the first printing. Condition: Very Good hardcover in Good dust jacket. Book appears sound and well preserved. Interior pages shown are clean and unmarked. Dust jacket remains complete and bright but shows rubbing, surface wear, edge creasing, and several chips and short tears along the upper edge, particularly at the spine head and upper front panel. Additional light wear at corners and extremities. Please see photographs for condition details.
