Sydney's controversial philosophy professor John Anderson and his Freethought Society added volatility to the mix with their rejection of orthodox politics. Dr Alan Barcan is an Honorary Associate of the Faculty of Education, University of Newcastle, having retired as Associate Professor in Education in 1986. He has written a number of books on Australian education. When a radical student, he was co-editor of Honi Soit (1946) and general secretary of the National Union of Australian University Students (1946-48).
