Inhaltsangabe

George Orwell (1903-50) was born Eric Hugh Blair, the son of a Customs and Excise official in Bengal. He later assumed the name Orwell. Novelist, sociological writer and the author, in Animal Farm, of a satire which shows every sign of being a permanent addition to literature, he was one of the most dynamic critics of the age in which he lived his all too brief life. He affected the thoughts of his contemporaries deeply, and in this sympathetic assessment Mr Hopkinson show and why he did so. Since Orwell's death his reputation has continued to increase, not only in Britain but throughout the world.

Mr Hopkinson, formerly a scholar of Pembroke College, Oxford, made an outstanding name for himself by his editing of Picture Post during its first decade of life. He has also published novels and short stories, including a distinguished collection The Transitory Venus (1948); his most recent publications are The Lady and the Cut-Throat (1958), In the Fiery Continent (1962), Picture Post, 1938-50 (1970) and Much Silence: Meher Baba, his life and work (with Dorothy Hopkinson, 1974). He edited the African-produced journal, Drum, was for four years Director of Training Courses for Journalists in Nairobi and Lagos, and in 1970 established the first university centre for the training of journalists in Britain, at University College, Cardiff.
