This is an examination of spelling, focusing in particular on the difficulties faced by present-day spellers, particularly the EFL learner or non-native speaker. It argues that spelling mistakes are not random and that understanding why they occur requires a knowledge of the history of orthography, the linguistic functions that are served by the orthographic features and the pscyhology of spelling. The book considers the development of computerized spellcheckers and explains the limitations of some of the current methods of design. Its conclusion proposes improvements that could be made to spelling correctors, which would help overcome the problems people have with spelling.
