Inhaltsangabe

When Agnes' family flee from the violence in their village, Agnes also leaves behind her best friend, Effie. Two years later Agnes returns from the refugee camp to try and rebuild her life, and, she hopes, her friendship. This is a story about two girls who come from different sides of a communal divide. As they relate their tale, the girls demonstrate how it is possible to build peace between two families and two communities caught up in a wider conflict.

The Path of Peace shows how children suffer most in times of conflict, but also how children can lead the way towards reconciliation. The school, where children from both communities study side by side, becomes the focus and symbol for the village's renewal. The example the girls and their teacher give of creating trust, accepting differences and making fresh starts, relate to conflict situations at all levels, from rebuilding personal relationships to national reconciliation.

This reader has been written by an experienced educationalist in conjunction with a language specialist. It is a Level 3 reader, intended for upper primary or lower secondary classes. It can be used as an integral part of a Language, Social Studies or Health Science curriculum. It has particular relevance for programmes promoting Peace Education and Life Skills development.

This reader has been prepared by the Child-to-Child Trust as a special addition to their widely used Primary Health Readers. It can be read together with the reader on landmines awareness, Five Friends of the Sun, as well as the series of three readers on the rights of the Girl Child.
