He also believed that latent powers within himself, such as Mesmerism, telepathy, animal magnetism, would be harnessed to accomplish feats dreamed of, but never achieved by the visionaries of the past. It was a time of optimism when anything and everything seemed possible. Writers felt free to let their imaginations run riot, and this was the heyday of H. G. Wells, Jules Verne and Conan Doyle. But as this collection shows, many other imaginative writers were also at work, giving their stories scientific twists which are often as daring as they are dramatic. Several ingredients of later science fiction here make their first appearance, gaining additional impact from the period setting.
