Dear Reader,

What you hold in your hands is a soundtrack unlike any you've ever heard or read. Sing Me a Story is a playlist of stories, about music, for music, because of music, through the music of poetry. You ready to groove?

Poetry, story, and music whether read, spoken, or heard, are expressions that reach us and deepen the meaning in our lives. Poetry can bring us into the internal landscape of the heart, story can ignite our imaginations and speak to our memories or histories, and music brings us into the soul. When a writer is able to make the three sing in harmony, then a story in verse is born.

The song and story of poetry has a long legacy among the people of Latin America and their diasporas to the United States. This living art form is found throughout our history from pre-Columbian eras once called Floricanto (flower and song) to modern times. It flows from the street vendors who sing the sale of their wares to the youth who improvise in rap and slam competitions in urban spaces; to those who pen their poems in garages or cafes or on their beds at the first light of morning to the decimistas who refine the craft of composing and improvising ten-line stanzas in remote parts of Latin America. Our songs, our stories, our tongue twisters, our dichos, all make their way to the indelible way we express ourselves in our musical, oral, and written traditions. It is from these traditions and practices that Sing Me a Story arises. It is a need to express the music of the written word and their interwoven stories from our unique cultural experiences.

The authors in this anthology include some of the most critically acclaimed writers in Latine literature, children's literature, and literature as a whole. You will also find new voices, which include poets new to children's literature, an emcee, and a celebrated musician. We represent only a fragment of the movement of our people across ethnicities, countries, races, and heart spaces. The music featured ranges from son montuno to rumba to bachata to denbow; sounds subways or voices or drums or birds make; inspired by everyone from Natalia Lafourcade to Selena to Michael Jackson to Bad Bunny. This playlist hits hard! No matter from where we come or what inspires us to sing, as the saying goes, "Cada cabeza es un mundo," each poet brings to the page the music of the word and the word inside the music.

The United States is experiencing a decidedly heinous anti-immigrant and anti-Latine time that dismisses our narratives, our accomplishments, our languages, and our struggles at every turn. It is precisely now when our most distinguished voices must be heard to rewrite and lift up the beautiful songs of our times.
