Inhaltsangabe

The first official update to the popular science-backed, anti-inflammatory approach to managing autoimmune disease, complete with meal plans and 70+ recipes—from a founding leader of the Autoimmune Protocol movement

Rates of autoimmune diagnosis have been rising dramatically and so too has interest in the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP), a science-backed dietary and lifestyle protocol. Feedback from thousands of practitioners and millions of patients, as well as new research, has indicated that AIP needs an update: many patients see results before extensive dietary eliminations. In The New Autoimmune Protocol, leading AIP authority Mickey Trescott explains not only the basics of autoimmune disease and new medical research, but also a new addition to the protocol: Modified AIP Elimination, which will make relief achievable by many more autoimmune sufferers.

The New Autoimmune Protocol includes detailed meal plans and more than 70 AIP-friendly recipes, divided into two essential sections:

  • Core AIP Recipes & Meal Plans: following the standard AIP elimination protocol (eliminating all grains, gluten, dairy, legumes, nightshades, processed vegetable oils, nuts and nut oils, seeds and seed oils, alcohol, and processed food chemicals)
  • Modified AIP Recipes & Meal Plans: the new AIP elimination protocol which is less-resitricted and now includes ghee, rice, pseudo-grains, legumes (except soy), and seeds.

This hybrid program guide and cookbook walks readers through the essential phases of AIP—transition, elimination, and reintroduction. Modified AIP recipes include Buckwheat Protein Porridge, Cozy White Bean Stew, Fall Veggies and Beef with Quinoa and Tahini Sauce, and Green Chicken Soba and Shiitake Mushroom Salad.

This book arms readers with flexible meal plans, delicious recipes, and the knowledge they need to regain their vitality whether they decide on Core or Modified AIP.

Preface

Some of life’s discoveries come just when you need them. I remember feeling overcome with a mix of relief and hope as I stumbled across the Autoimmune Protocol for the first time—I was in my twenties and in the depths of my first autoimmune health crisis: completely overwhelmed by debilitating symptoms, exhausted from searching for answers, and plagued by the fear that I’d be sick for the rest of my life. I had recently lost my job due to unrelenting symptoms, and I’d been through countless unproductive medical appointments. Despite my persistent symptoms, doctors had little to offer besides diagnosing me with two autoimmune conditions, wishing me good luck, and sending me on my way. Anyone who has struggled with an autoimmune diagnosis knows this feeling well—the crushing mix of frustration, fear, and the hope that if you just keep looking or asking, there might be a path forward.

On the “tolerable days,” which seemed to be few and far between, I continued combing online to see if there was a complementary approach that I was missing, since I had run out of options with my healthcare providers. I eventually came across the Autoimmune Protocol (otherwise known as AIP)—a structured dietary and lifestyle program that immediately stood out as a potential path to progress. The moment I read about it, something clicked, and I knew it could be the key to sustainably recovering my health.

This was in 2011, and the Autoimmune Protocol was just a vague idea beginning to take form. There was no “official” guidance or instructions—just a list of seven broad food categories to avoid and some theorizing about why it might work. In my research online and in support forums, I learned that other autoimmune patients were reporting that they experienced food sensitivities and chronic nutrient deficiencies, and that they found lifestyle factors (like high stress or lack of sleep) to be significant triggers of symptoms. So much of this rang true for me, too

After everything I had been through and what was at stake, it wasn’t hard to convince myself to start the elimination diet and make some lifestyle changes to see if my health would improve. And it did—week by week, my symptoms reduced, and in six months, I was able to return to a baseline of health that enabled me to live well, despite autoimmune disease. I wasn’t alone in this transformation—other autoimmune patients were also discovering AIP, sharing their experiences online, and forming the foundation of a growing community. Grateful for the tools that helped us heal, many felt a deep responsibility to spread the word, hoping to offer guidance and encouragement to those still searching for answers.

The Autoimmune Protocol

Let’s back up a bit—what is AIP, exactly? AIP is a systematic and evidence-based approach to determining which foods and lifestyle components are supportive of your best health, even if you experience chronic illness like autoimmune disease. This is done through implementing a specific dietary and lifestyle protocol with three consecutive phases—transition, elimination, and reintroduction—usually over a period of three to six months.

How does it work? The AIP dietary approach removes food-driven sources of inflammation and increases nutrient density, while the lifestyle approach includes prioritizing practices that are important for managing health, like improving sleep, stress management, and finding balance with exercise. Through carefully working through each phase of AIP, you learn how these dietary and lifestyle strategies impede or support your best health and arrive at a personalized, sustainable structure to confidently manage your health going forward.

Growth of the AIP Movement

In the early days of the AIP movement, the biggest challenge in adopting the protocol was simply finding recipes. What do you eat if you are avoiding grains, legumes, eggs, dairy, nuts, seeds, and nightshade-family vegetables? Before my own illness I had worked as a personal chef, prepping and batch-cooking healthy meals from scratch for busy families with complex dietary needs. While navigating the protocol myself, I decided to put my skills to use creating and sharing AIP recipes online; I also went back to school to study nutrition. It turns out, a lot of autoimmune patients had heard about AIP and were searching for resources, so this led to self-publishing the very first recipe book devoted to AIP, The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook, in 2013. I had a simple goal for this passion project: to make it easier for the next person looking to begin AIP, hopefully making their path to success a little smoother by sharing everything I’d learned on my own.

I knew the AIP community would grow—hundreds and eventually thousands of others were sharing their stories online. What I didn’t know was how fast these stories would spread. In a few short years, The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook had become a viral bestseller and my website, Autoimmune Wellness, was serving AIP recipes, food lists, and resources to millions of people per year, facts that still amaze me. Seeing the impact firsthand, I realized that AIP wasn’t just a personal experiment, it was becoming a revolution in how people approached wellness with autoimmune disease.

This explosive growth led to another phase in the history of AIP—one that I never saw coming, not even in my wildest dreams. Starting in 2015, medical research teams took interest in the Autoimmune Protocol and began conducting studies into its usefulness for managing specific autoimmune conditions. Since then, formal medical studies have been performed using AIP for conditions including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis, validating anecdotal evidence of the usefulness of AIP for these common autoimmune conditions. While many of us who adopted AIP in the early days were told that there was no research on AIP and that it couldn’t possibly be helpful, we now have a growing body of evidence showing efficacy of the protocol, which is incredible! In addition to validation, this research also paved the way for greater awareness and accessibility in the medical community.

Around the same time the AIP medical research began, many forward-thinking healthcare providers became interested in using AIP with their patients. In 2017, this led me to collaborate with my AIP nutrition colleagues to create AIP Certified Coach, a program training healthcare providers in best practices in implementing AIP with their patients and clients. Since then, more than a thousand providers from both the conventional and natural healthcare worlds, including physicians, naturopaths, researchers, nurses, dietitians, physical therapists, holistic nutritionists, and health coaches, have completed the program and incorporated AIP in their work. Watching AIP become an integral part of so many healthcare practices is a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come—and how much potential there is to continue making a difference.

Today, AIP stands on a foundation that didn’t exist fourteen years ago—a thriving patient community of millions, a growing body of medical research validating its effectiveness, and a network of experienced healthcare providers trained in its implementation and customization. This collective knowledge has given me an invaluable opportunity to analyze what works, refine the approach, and improve it for the next wave of people seeking personal healing. The insights gained from countless patient experiences, clinical research studies, and healthcare provider feedback have all led to the first major update to AIP since its inception, and the driving...
