Inhaltsangabe

A guide to the notable markers, monuments, epitaphs, and history of Lone Fir Cemetery, in Portland, OR, including the true early history and history of the Chinese disinterment in 1949 when the bones were dug up and returned to China. Lone Fir was named by National Geographic as one of the ten best cemeteries in the world to visit in 2011. It's a fascinating Freethinkers' melange of prostitutes, statesmen, firemen, business people, suffragettes, and town characters under a canopy of mature trees. It's visited daily by mothers with baby carriages, bike riders, joggers, Russian grave-tenders, lovers, homeless people, musicians, students, and old people looking for a grave. Lone Fir: The Guide leads the reader to the best of the monuments, the best art, the most interesting epitaphs, and the nooks and crannies the casual visitor is likely to miss or not notice. It highlights the most significant markers that you shouldn't miss. The Guide also clears up the confused early history of the cemetery which includes the story of the Chinese community and their curiously intertwined history with Lone Fir beginning with a handshake in 1850 and continuing until most of their bones were shipped back to an uncertain fate in China in 1949. The old Chinese section, Block 14, is now headed towards being a memorial park for both the Chinese and anonymous patients from a former psychiatric hospital. Maps are included to facilitate locating monuments.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Johan Mathiesen photographs the cemeteries of the Oregon Territory. His previous title, Mad As the Mist and Snow: Exploring Oregon Through Its Cemeteries was published in 2011. His Flickr site, DeadManTalking, exhibits over 17,000 photos from better than 750 cemeteries. Johan and his wife, Kay, acquired one of the last plots sold in Lone Fir. Johan approaches cemeteries the way a real estate agent approaches a new house: what would it be like to live here? How’s the neighborhood? Place maintained? Any interesting reading? Good art? Quirky stuff? How’s the plumbing? Location, location, location. When he’s not thinking of good places to be dead, Johan ponders his four children and five grandchildren and appreciates that the population will start to go down in four score or so, so he doesn’t have to feel too guilty. He doesn’t. Born in Wisconsin, he dragged twin boys (fraternal) to Oregon many, many years ago and then added two more children. He was working on instant family. It worked. Mainly through his life, Johan ate. He liked eating so much he became a cook and baker to satisfy his cravings. He’s satisfied them and doesn’t need to do that anymore. Whew! When he wasn’t eating and raising kids, he was writing screeds. He became very good at writing screeds. No one wants to read a screed, so he learned to write a few other things. Like guide books to cemeteries. But if you need a screed, he’s got a ton.
