David Williams has spent over 45 years in the world of academic medicine. He has been a professor of clinical engineering, pro-vice-chancellor, professor and director of international affairs, author of over 30 books and 400 scientific papers, editor of a world-renowned medical journal, lecturer, expert witness, key advisor and the founder of a Cape Town-based company dedicated to the development of technologies to treat children suffering from rheumatic heart disease. However, with his Welsh roots, David has increasingly felt compelled to express himself through poetry, rather than strictly scientific prose. In the last decade, he and his wife Peggy O’Donnell have lived in the UK, Belgium, the USA and South Africa and have travelled extensively in Asia, Africa and Australasia. Many of the rich observations and experiences afforded him by these travels form the subject matter of the poems collected in this, his first non-scientific book.

David Williams is a Professor of Regenerative Medicine. He is Welsh and now a resident of the USA. With his wife Peggy he spends three months a year in Franschhoek. He has written many books of a medical /technology nature and uses the tranquility of Franschhoek to develop a more personal and philosophical approach to writing. His first, and so far only, book of poetry, A Decade in Transition, was published in Cape Town in 2016. Several other are planned. He regularly reads poetry at events in the USA. A few years ago, with Professor Peter Zilla, the Christiaan Barnard Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Groote Schuur, he created a company, Strait Access Technologies, which is developing therapies to treat young people, especially in Africa, who suffering and dying from rheumatic heart disease. He is Chairman of the company, and clinical trials of their technology will take place shortly. In 2012 he and Professor Zilla gave a Café Scientifique at the Ebony Gallery in Franschhoek. This was titled ‘Straight to the Heart of a Child’. This was the inspiration for a Café Poetique, ‘Heart of Lightness’ which took place at Ebony in 2014.
