Jenny Teichman is a Fellow of New Hall, Cambridge. She is the author of The Mind and the Soul (1974), Illegitimacy (1982), Pacifism and the Just War (1986) and Philosophy and the Mind (1988).
Katherine Evans is a recent Cambridge graduate. She works for a law firm in Newcastle upon Tyne and writes logical aptitude tests for law students.
In this new, revised and expanded edition of the popular student text, Teichman and Evans introduce philosophy as it is studied in the English-speaking world.
The authors divide the area into six fields: metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of science, logic and the philosophy of life. Beginning with a brief account of what philosophy is, they then guide the reader through the most central and important questions of philosophy, including questions about the nature of existence, knowledge, freedom, God, morality, politics, science, reason and human purpose. The second edition includes new chapters on ‘Life and Death’, and ‘Marx and Marxism’.
Philosophy – A Beginner’s Guide is helpful, clear and realistic. It is an eminently useful book for anyone who wants to fine out what philosophy is all about.
