William Rutherford is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Southern California, where he was also Director of the American Language Institute from 1981 to 1984. His publications, ranging over language acquisition, language pedagogy, and grammatical theory, include Second Language Grammar: Learning and Teaching (1987) and, as editor, Language Universals and Second Language Acquisition (1987). From 1988 to 1998 he was co-general editor of the monograph series Language acquisition and Language Disorders. In 1995 he was the recipient of an edited festschrift volume: The Current State of Interlanguage: Studies in Honor of William E. Rutherford.

Divided into major sections on grammatical categories, operations, relations, typology, and other areas, the volume is motivated throughout by the view that what is to be learned from the study of language is accomplished more effectively through the 'doing' of linguistics than through merely reading about it or listening to someone talk about it.

The task-orientated, problem solving format of the Workbook provides the ideal format for inculcating the requisite analytical skills.
