Inhaltsangabe

In nature and disease, microorganisms tend to be associated with surfaces, in so-called biofilms. Though this has long been recognized, the far-reaching consequences of this association have attracted attention only recently. The investigation of biofilms requires special techniques because the physiology of biofilm microbes changes dramatically as soon as they are removed from surfaces of attachment.
The main aim of this book is to describe the wide variety of special techniques necessary for the detailed study of biofilms, as well as the theoretical background. The book will be a valuable aid in the many areas of pure and applied science and in industry where biofilms are of importance, including microbiology, applied chemistry, biotechnology and fermentation science, medicine, water technology and food science.

The consequences, both beneficial and deleterious, of the associations between microbes and surfaces have long been recognised. Though the first detailed description of microbial attachment to surfaces appeared exactly fifty years ago, the term 'biofilm' did not make its appearance in the literature until the late 1970s. The almost universal association between microorganisms and surfaces is now widely accepted - and the presence of a biofilm can have profound effects on on health, water-dependent industrial processes, energy efficiency and water quality. In fact, it has been estimated that, in the UK, the cost of biofouling represents 0.5% of the Gross National Product. This volume contains 19 papers reflecting the state-of-the-art in microbial biofilm research.
