It is not possible to name all to whose work these pages are indebted for any value they may possess. In certain instances acknowledgment is made in the course of the narrative. It is a great pleasure, how ever, to express the writer's most hearty thanks to the Secretaries of so many Societies, who put at his disposal all avail able literature and their own personal know ledge. In the class-room of Professor Mirbt, at Marburg - one Of the first to deliver University lectures on the History of Missions - lessons were learned, some fruit of which, it is hoped, is manifest now. And to Mr. Wardlaw Thompson, in conclusion, the author expresses the deepest sense of grati tude for much counsel generously given, and for a careful revisal Of the proof-sheets, thus placing at the author's disposal his great funds of accurate knowledge and intimate acquaintance with the problems Of missionary work.
