E ora si pensi quant' allegrezza, qual contento sereno dovè recare negli animi la novità di quei Melodrammi, nelle sale pa trizie o nelle Medicee, in un Teatro elegante, costruito apposta, cantati e strumentati dal fiore degli artisti di quel tempo, fra scenarj acconciamente dipinti, accomodate le vesti e ogni ac cessorio alla rappresentazione drammatica! L' origini d'una cosa ci porgono più intimo concetto della sua natura, e noi lo raccogliamo appunto dall'esordio di detti Melodrammi, ove tutte le arti belle cospiravano in armonia; tantoche costi tuivano, come infatti sono, tutte ad un tempo l'arte, an ziehe arti divise. Non la poesia del Rinuccini da sè, non il canto nè il suono, nè il fulgido teatro, nè il resto da se solo, davano un pieno sentimento di piacere vivo e amabile, bensì tutto l'insieme. Il canto e il suono, gli atteggiamenti, le fog gie del vestiario, e ogni altra bellezza di pitture, di sculture, di teatro bene architettato, centuplicavano l' espressione della poesia; che viceversa dava soltanto essa la significazione de terminata de' suoni modulati e strumentali, delle scene, degli attori e d'ogni cosa che al dramma si riferisce. Così dunque, la musica non apparve ancella umile della poesia, si potente alleata; e alleata con loro la nobile schiera delle Arti.
