Si nous admettons que ce sont la les deux races domi nantes dont nous descendons, pouvons - nous con tester que nos aïeux aient aimé à se moquer par goût de ce qu'ils haïssaient, et souvent même de ce qu'ils paraissaient aimer. L'esprit français a toujours été satirique. Dès que la nation fran çaise a commencé d'exister, dès qu'elle a eu une littérature la langue vive et déliée de nos aïeux.
