Turney's ship, the Shokalskiy, with 71 people on board, became trapped in pack ice on Christmas Eve. The hull of the ship was pierced by a tower of ice. This is a classic adventure story with a 21st century twist. Unlike Edwardian Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton, the author had his wife and children with him, and they all had a very long and dangerous wait to be rescued.
