The sisters are Grace, Heather, Cathy and Vivienne. Vivienne is the youngest, so she always gets the clothes the other three have outgrown, and she wants something new that belongs to her alone. The book moves through episodes of family and town life: Grace's debutante dress, disasters in the kitchen, dealings with the O'Keefe family, and the fanciful stories of their cousin Isobel. There are also snobbish relatives and small-town gossip, all set in an era of film stars and red lipstick.
