Anna's cruel step-sister sends her to find violets in the forest in the depths of winter and her step-mother orders her not to return without them. Anna sets out on a magical journey and meets twelve men sitting by a fire. They are the months of theyear and the current King, December, is in charge. They help Anna by magically changing the month until violets bloom in the forest. Anna takes the flowers home and is met by anger as her step-mother and sister hear her story. They too search for the twelve men but they are out for gain and their greed is punished. Anna lives happily and her garden always flourishes.

Nettie Lowenstein is an accomplished narrator of folk tales. She lives in North London. Elizabeth Harbour studied at Maidstone College of Art and the Royal College of Art; she received the Princess of Wales Scholarship and a National Award for Editorial Illustration. Elizabeth lives in South London.
