Sams Teach Yourself UNIX in 24 Hours, Third Edition is designed to take users from a novice to an accomplished user in just 24 one-hour sessions. Written by an expert in the field, the book starts off with an introduction to UNIX, then covers file handling, pipes and filters, the vi and emacs text editors, shells, job control, permissions, printing, and connecting to remote computers via the Internet. The book also discusses UNIX programming and includes a special appendix on working with the Apache Server.

Dave Taylor is president of Intuitive Systems, a strategic and tactical consulting firm working with dot-com startups, and currently serves on the board of three Internet startups. Founder of startups The Internet Mall and iTrack, he has been involved with Unix and the Internet since 1980, having created the popular Elm Mail System and Embot mail autoresponder. A prolific author, he has been published more than 1,000 times, and his most recent books include the best-selling Creating Cool HTML 4.0 Web Pages and The eAuction Insider. Previous positions include being a research scientist at HP Palo Alto Laboratories and senior reviews editor of SunWorld/Advanced Systems magazine. He has contributed software to the official 4.4 release of Berkeley Unix (BSD), and his programs are found in all versions of Linux and other popular Unix variants. Dave has a bachelor's degree in computer science (University of California at San Diego, 1984) and a master's degree in educational computing (Purdue University, 1995), and he teaches Internet and interface design courses at San Jose State University's Professional Development Program.
