Fred Lebow, past president of the New York Road Runners Club, directed the New York City Marathon since its inception in 1970. Despite brain cancer, he continued running until his death in 1994.

Gloria Averbuch, a competitive runner who has worked for the New York Road Runners Club since 1979, has written six books on running and fitness.
