Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Well, if you're going to own a book about wines why not buy one that was previously owned by Charles Mara. This book was modestly inscribed on the front free end paper by the author to Mr. Mara. The inscription reads "It's a naïve little domestic wine book without any breeding. I hope you will be amused by its presumption". Frank J. Prial of the New York Times disagreed, writing " Simply no one writes about California wines as knowledgeably, as entertainingly, and as unpompously as Bob Thompson". Here's a little bit about Charles F. Mara: "A nationally recognized wine judge, winery producer/owner and wine merchant, Charles F. Mara is a force within the wine industry. Having traveled to many of the world's most prestigious wine regions, he is a well respected and knowledgeable wine guru who brings to table a love of wine. Wine judge for numerous prestigious wine tastings, as well as serving on several wine tasting panels, Professor of Oenology and member of the Society of Wine Educators, he has also appeared on local TV and Radio shows, was appointed as the Consumer Representative by the Governor of New York to the State Wine Grape Marketing Order Advisory Board, and has been a "Tastemaster" for monthly wine tasting events designed to increase wine awareness and appreciation by consumers. His knowledge has also led him to be a consultant to many restaurateurs and retailers. Charles is also noticed, not once but twice, in the Guinness Book of World Records. One listing is "most paid for a single bottle of wine," - an 1806 Lafite-Rothschild for $28,000 (1978) - and the other is "most paid for a bottle case of American wine" - 1979 Opus I for $24,000 (1981)". As a nationally recognized judge of books (just kidding) here is my verdict. The book itself is in excellent condition. The covers are spotless. The corners are perfect. The spine ends are not worn. The gilt lettering on the white cloth spine is quite bright. This book is very solidly bound, absolutely no issues in that regard. The page edges are very clean. So are the end papers. So are all the pages in the book. I didn't see any soiling. Nor are there any markings. No creases or dogeared corners. With the exception of the author's signed inscription there isn't any writing on any page in the book. The dust jacket is Not price-clipped. The flaps are in excellent condition. So is the rest of the dust jacket. There aren't any tears. The spine ends and corners do not show any wear. The dust jacket has only one imperfection. At least I think it is an imperfection. As you can see in the photograph of the spine it's a different color than the rest of the jacket. I'm pretty certain that's the result of sun fading. If so, no harm no foul, it makes for a nice color scheme. The dust jacket will be fitted with a protective cover. 335 pages. Second printing. I've priced the book at less than half of the price that Mr. Mara paid for the 1806 Lafite-Rothschild. The humor is on the house. Inscribed by Author(s). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 000883
