Precis of Run, Don’t Walk: A MemoirThis memoir, presented through the eyes of protagonist Matthew’s mother, leads the reader into a world few would ever willingly choose to enter in ‘real’ life. The story opens with mother and son sitting in a neurologist’s office, as the doctor opens the appointment by pronouncing, “Your tumor’s a lymphoma.” Matthew is at this time, thirty-three, married, with one toddler. What follows is the amazing tale of his ability to cope with this horrifying, unexpected circumstance.And yet, depressing as this situation sounds, what you will read during the almost surreal mix of occurrences that ensues, is not all darkly depressing. Incredibly, what transpires over the nine and a half year period of Matthew’s illness, is, as often as not, funny, sometimes even hilarious. The humor results mainly from the incredible positivity of this young man’s attitude, especially during the frequent times when his penchant for black humor precludes any possibility of pity on anyone’s part. To give you an example, on one occasion, following dinner hosted by Matthew at a posh downtown Palo Alto restaurant for various friends and family before a semester-long literature class for adults at Stanford, Matthew suddenly stops walking toward the lecture hall and bends over laughing, to say, “I bet Jane [the professor] is now calling roll. Can’t you just picture everyone in the room looking around when I don’t answer, saying, “Matt must have died.”Such an amazing ability for a young father to display throughout this ordeal, finds its reflection in the reactions of his family and many friends. All of them, inspired by Matthew’s bravery, work hard, to match, and thus buttress, his own dark humor and emotional strength in a time of enormous angst for every one of them.
