Polish Interludes is my personal story, my song. Before coming to America, I was a singer of lyrics by other poets. This was a unique adventure and lots of fun. Traveling as a troubadour throughout my native country Poland, still during communism’s reign, offered me a special experience and thrill. In 1981, less than two months before proclaiming Marshal Law by the Polish Communist government, the time came. Due to a very tough and complicated situation in the country, my wife, our children, and I had to leave our place of origin, sell everything we could not take with us, pack the necessities in four pieces of luggage, and go. Did we know at what country to aim our hopes? Maybe Australia, Canada, France, Sweden, America? It now seems natural that we are in America. This nation accepts us as her own. But then, in the Austrian refugee camp, Traiskirchen, the uncertainty of our final destination deeply disturbed us. When waiting for our departure from Austria to America, I thought about my parents who had to leave Vilnius, their place of birth and work, and face the unknown in the spring of 1946.This is how these nocturnes came about. I felt compelled to compose songs, craved to share with readers my journeys from Vilnius, through Gdansk and Vienna, to America. These are observations, reflections, and emotions ranging from frustration to delight, from bitterness to wonder, pleasure, and love. I dedicate Polish Interludes not only to my family, but to all those forced to abandon their mother country to start their lives from scratch for the hope of freedom and prosperity.

I have been curious about poetry as far back as I can remember. During my childhood, my mother wrote patriotic poems. They showed on scraps of paper in her grocery store and at home. Long ago, when my country was red, my mother was arrested twice for her patria nostra poems. Her writings vanished. I wrote my first verse probably at the age of twelve. This was about the Radunia River, one of many rivers in Poland. Her wild beauty inspired my poetic bent. In my youth I sang poetry. During Technical University years, I belonged to a popular movement of Sung Poetry. It taught me to be more sensitive to my fellow country people and helped to escape the nonsense of communistic reality. But singing poetry was not enough for me. At a certain point, I became an instructor at the Amateur Theater of Poetry. I was interested in animating written words effectively with simple means of gestures, body movements, reciting, lights, and plain everyday props. This work attracted national attention. My group had positive reviews published in recognized professional magazines. We also received a prize from the Ministry of Culture and Art. I came to America in May 1982. In this country, I did not have much time to think about poetry, but one day I began to write. I craved to express my thoughts, emotions, and life experience in words. I wanted to see them on the computer screen, on paper, and maybe in a book. The adventurous struggle began. I started attending two literary groups in Gainesville, FLorida. Constructive critique and encouragement from the writers of Gainesville inspired me to open to a fascinating literary journey and still continue to enthuse me. Without this group of writers, my bilingual (English-Polish) book of poems, reflections, and memories, Polish Interludes, would not be possible. I feel that this important step propels me to rich voyage of unexpected poetic gems. I am an immigrant. In a bilingual collection of my poems (English and Polish) I write about my experiences from and reflections about Vilnius, Gdansk, Vienna, and Gainesville. In Polish Interludes, I talk about farewells and returns. The poems are short stories, pictures of simple people. The reader even will encounter a dancing cow from Vilnius.
