A Brief Introduction on the book Smart Materials in Physical and Biological Applications Chapter one deals with the Bacteriorhodopsin (BR) thin film-based spatial light modulator (SLM) and erbium/ytterbium (Er3++Yb3+) doped polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) optical waveguides for the study of retinal response. The proposed polymer optical waveguide model can be improvised for use in the simulation of the retina cone mosaic and retinal implants for patients with less or no vision. Chapter two is about the plant ScopariadulcisLinn showing both antidiabetic and antihypertensive properties. But as the diuretic and antioxidant properties are related to these two properties, ScopariadulcisLinn also shows diuretic and antioxidant activities. It has shown significant reduction in systolic blood pressure on DOCA induced hypertensive rats. Chapter three deals with the pseudogap-induced superconductivity used to study the specific heat anomaly in cuprates and analysis of the tunneling spectra. In this chapter the band Jahn-Teller distortion (JT) and the charge density wave (CDW) interactions are considered as pseudogaps for the superconductivity in high-Tc system. Chapter four deals with the roots of SidaacutaBurm F. (Malvaceae) whose preliminary phytochemical investigation indicates the presence of alkaloid, phenolic compound tannic, flavonoid, carbohydrates, glycosides, proteins and amino acids. The ethanol extract of Sidaacuta has exhibited potent post coital, anti-implantation, abortion, estrogenic and antiestrogenic activity and reduction in sperm motility. Chapter five is about High dielectric oxides like TiO2 and BaTiO3 deposited on Si(111) surface prepared using solid state reaction technique and pulsed laser deposition technique with technological applications for device fabrication. Chapter six deals with the antidiarrhoeal and anti ulcer activity of the dietary fiber of C. fistula and T. indica shown to be the handiwork of the soluble dietary fiber which not only successfully controls the ulcer induced by pyloric ligation but also binds the toxins and rehydrated the intestine by holding the water due to high viscosity thereby serving as an antidiarrhoeal agent also. Chapter seven is about the antifungal activity of the binuclear macrocyclic complexes screened with fungal pathogens (A.niger, A. flavus, and T. viridae) against a standard antifungal agent Fluconazole and thus found to have robust antifungal property.
