Purple Cloth. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: VG+. 1st ed. xiii+162; only obvious flaw is that rear wraparound of unclipped jacket has some small pencil notes, two brown horizontal thin sellotape ghost lines and small patch of surface damage - none of this is of much consequence. I should also note perhaps that the ISBN number as given registered as invalid when used for search. A very nice copy of this comprehensive survey ranging from ancient Greek and biblical views and Middle Ages, via empiricism and rationalism to the 17th century. Will seal jacket in protective wrapper when ordered. Note: quoted non-UK shipping rates are calculated for 500-700 gram net weight, cost will be modified up or down as appropriate outside this range. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition. xiv, 162 pp. Original cloth. Near Fine, in near fine dust jacket. 'This book is a systematic and articulate attempt to show the philosophical as well as sociological connections between science and Protestantism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Hooykaas tends to oversimplify when he categorizes 'types' of Christianity and of philosophy. His own theological biases sometimes intrude. But the book remains important for anyone doing work in our field. It is excellent for an introductory discussion of the philosophical issues--and especially as regards the relation of the 'voluntaristic doctrine of God' to early modern natural philosophy. Hooykaas examines continental as well as English Calvinists and considers why and how they believed science should be cultivated: (1) to the glory of God and to the benefit of humankind; (2) empirically, in spite of human authorities; and (3) by using our hands. The book is a veritable mine of relevant biblical texts' (Richard S. Brooks & David K. Himrod, Science and Religion in the English Speaking World, 1600-1727: A Bibliographic Guide to the Secondary Literature, 2001, pp. 201-203). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 05967
