Summer in Normandy: fields, villages, hedgerows, orchards, weather, dust, and the small matter of several armies trying to settle Europe by means of armour, artillery and terrified men in metal boxes. The word ?summer? is doing a lot of emotional tidying here, as though sunshine makes everything less loud. This is a memoir of the weeks after D-Day, following life with a tank unit as the Allied armies pushed inland from the beaches into the brutal, cramped, grinding business of the Normandy campaign. It is not the postcard version of liberation, with everyone waving flags and history arriving on time. It is the close-up version: roads blocked, hedgerows hiding unpleasant surprises, villages reduced to tactical problems, engines overheating, nerves tightening, and tanks discovering that being large and armoured does not make one invincible, merely more conspicuous. The Normandy campaign had a particular talent for making progress feel both heroic and miserably slow. Every field could become an argument. Every lane might contain an anti-tank gun with strong opinions. Every movement had to be paid for in petrol, patience, fear and, too often, lives. A tank looks magnificent from a distance; from inside, in battle, it is rather more like being sealed into a noisy industrial cupboard while strangers attempt to open it with high explosives. Jones gives the experience its proper human scale. The campaign is not just arrows on a map, nor the grand comfortable language of ?breakout? and ?advance.? It is men living with machines, waiting, moving, eating when possible, sleeping badly, repairing, swearing, hoping, enduring and carrying on because that is what the day has decided they will do. Sixty-four days is not long in peacetime. In Normandy in 1944, it was enough time for whole landscapes, units and lives to be rearranged beyond recognition. There is a useful irony in the tank itself: built as a symbol of modern power, but entirely dependent on tired crews, muddy roads, vulnerable supply lines and the deeply old-fashioned courage of people who would probably have preferred a quiet trade and regular tea. Armour gives protection, but not comfort; mobility, but not certainty; firepower, but not immunity from the next hedge, ditch, shell or mistake. War, being rude, declines to become simple just because engineering has become heavy. For readers of D-Day, Normandy, British armour, personal military memoirs, or the less polished realities of the campaign after the landing craft had gone home, this is a strong bit of wartime shelf material. It sits nicely in that awkward place between history and witness, where the big event is still visible, but the mud on the boots has not yet been edited out.
